Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 26 daguerreotypes of women, incl. half plate example.
Half plate seated portrait of an aging woman wearing a brooch and gauzy bonnet. (Many specs of dust or other material between glass and plate, some spotting, oxidation to mat.) Housed in a Union case (soiling, chipping, partly functional closure clasp). -- Sixth plate portrait of a woman with a slight smirk, wearing a dress with dark piping and a floral, gauzy bonnet in her hair. (Some scratching, tarnishing, other imperfections.) Housed in a pressed paper case (nearly separated at spine, significant wear). -- Small sixth plate or ninth plate portrait of a young woman seated on an upholstered piece of furniture, with one of her hands positioned near her neck and her eyes gazing just off-camera. (Spotting and other imperfections to image, heavy spotting to mat, no preserver.) Housed in a hand painted book-style case (some crackling to surface, other surface wear). -- Sixth plate portrait of a woman wearing a bonnet and a partially visible handbag, identified as the "wife of Charles Halsey" on inscribed note within case. (Tarnishing to edges, contrast quite light, image rather faded; no preserver.) Housed loosely in a fully separated pressed paper case (significant wear). -- And 22 other daguerreotypes including 3 quarter plate examples and 10 sixth plate examples. Some without cases. Conditions vary. -- Together, 26 daguerreotypes of women.
[With:] Sixth plate ambrotype of a full-figured older woman holding a shawl around herself. (Significant darkening/loss to right edge, notable vertical scratch to upper portion, other imperfections.) Housed in a half pressed paper case (general wear).
