Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 11 quarter plate daguerreotype portraits incl. WHITEHURST & JAQUITH examples.
Bust portrait of a gentleman with sideburns wearing an overcoat. (Some tarnishing and discoloration/spotting throughout.) Housed in a leatherette case (general wear, some loss to velvet pad). Brass mat stamped "JAQUITH / 98 B.WAY." This almost certainly refers to Nathaniel C. Jaquith (also spelled Jacquith), who was listed at that address from 1849-1857. -- Seated portrait of an older gentleman with an upturned top hat on the table next to him and with his hand in motion during the exposure. (Some tarnishing to edges, contrast a bit light, heavy oxidation to mat.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case with velvet pad stamped for J. H. WHITEHURST GALLERIES (split, general wear). -- And 9 others. Some without cases. Conditions vary. -- Together, 11 quarter plate daguerreotypes of men and women.
