Granny Hamner's Complete Original 1950s Philadelphia Phillies Uniform
A remarkable artifact from one of the most significant figures in Philadelphia Phillies history.
Granville Wilbur "Granny" Hamner was a standout shortstop and second baseman who played 16 Major League seasons - the majority with the Phillies. Born on April 26, 1927, in Richmond, Virginia, Hamner debuted in the majors at just 17 years old in 1944, eventually becoming a central figure on the "Whiz Kids" team that won the National League pennant in 1950. That season, Hamner played a career-high 157 games and was instrumental in the team's success. Hamner was a three-time All-Star (1952–1954) and known for his clutch hitting and defensive prowess. Over his career, he amassed 1,529 hits, 104 home runs, and 708 RBIs, with a batting average of .262. He also made occasional pitching appearances, recording a 5.40 ERA over 13.1 innings. Despite a sometimes contentious relationship with Phillies management, Hamner's place in the franchise's history was honored on the Phillies Wall of Fame in 1987.
This wool home uniform features the Phillies logo sewn on the front of the jersey and the number 2 on the back. A Wilson tag with a size "42" flag is located on the front tail, and ventilation holes are present under the sleeves. The pants include a Wilson tag and a size "36" label in the waistband. The Wilson jersey tag is consistent with the style used in other MLB uniforms from 1957.
After Hamner's use with the Phillies, the uniform was passed down to the team's minor league system. It remained with a minor leaguer's family for years before being sold to our consignor.
