STEVENSON, Robert Louis (1850-1894). New Arabian Nights. London: Chatto & Windus, 1882.
2 volumes, 8vo. 32pp. publisher's catalogue dated May 1882 at end of vol.2. Original olive green cloth stamped in an arabesque design in red, black, and gilt, by Burn & Co. with binders' ticket (spines a bit skewed, light rubbing to extremes, vol.2 front joint starting). Provenance: Maurice Hewlett (1861-1923), English novelist (bookplate).
MAURICE HEWLETT'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, with "r" lacking from "Dictator" on p.246, vol.1; p.155 misnumbered "55" and the misspelling "Maledroit" for "Maletroit" on p.179, vol.2. The Pavilion on the Links, which takes up about half of vol.2, was considered by Conan Doyle as "the very model of dramatic narratives." Beineke, 138; Queen's Quorum 11.
