Lot Description

RUSSELL, John (1885-1956). The Red Mark. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1919.


8vo. Original cloth with top edge stained in red; publisher's dust jacket (rubbing, soiling, sunning to spine, chipping and folds along extremities with section of upper rear dust jacket missing). Provenance: Paul S. Seybolt (bookplate, presentation inscription).

FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY RUSSELL TO PAUL SEYBOLT, "With appreciation of his so friendly and continuing interest in my work." The Red Mark is one of Russell's best known works, and was adapted into a 1928 silent film starring Nina Quartero and Gaston Glass which has since been selected for preservation by the Library of Congress.

[With]: RUSSELL. Typed letter signed ("John Russell") to Paul S. Seybolt, Santa Monica, 1 pp, 10 April 1938. In this letter Russell thanks Seybolt for his letter and offers his congratulations on procuring a copy of The Red Mark, writing: "You were lucky to find a "Red Mark". I have none. It is a collector's item!" Includes original envelope.
