George du Maurier was an English cartoonist and author who was best known for his work with Punch and as the author of Trilby. This work in particular is credited not only with having introduced the Svengali character type into the Western cultural lexicon but also for inspiring Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera. A close friend of J.M. Barrie, du Maurier's grandchildren served as the character basis for the children in Peter Pan.
