Lot Description
MACHIAVELLI, Niccolo (1469-1527). The Works of the Famous Nicolas Machiavel, Citizen and Secretary of Florence. Translated by Henry Neville. London: printed for John Starkey, 1675.
Folio (311 x 191 mm). Title page in double rule, section titles, 5pp. ads at end. (Slight marginal dampstaining, spotting and toning to title-page, small tears to final ad leaf with slight loss of text.) 19th century marbled boards, neatly rebacked and recornered in modern calf (some gentle rubbing to boards). Provenance: Ro. Sinclair (early signature on title-page and advertisements); Rev. J. Mitchell Harvey (bookplate and ownership inscription dated 1882); J.E.R. Oldfield (ownership inscription dated 1910).
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION IN ENGLISH OF MACHIAVELLI'S WORKS, with a translation attributed to Henry Neville. This edition includes: The History of Florence; The Prince; The Discourses of Nicholas Machiavel, Upon the First Decade of Titus Livius; and The Art of War. Each work has a separate title, but with continuous pagination. Also included is "Nicholas Machiavel's letter to Zanobius Buondelmontius" (not in fact by Machiavelli but by Neville).
