8vo. 20th century half blue morocco gilt; original "Greek flag" wrappers bound in (boards detached but present, severe rubbing, tape remnant to front cover).
THE PIRATED FIRST AMERICAN EDITION with misspelling of "Jonathan" on pp. 2 and inverted text line on pp. 323. "Copies of this pirated ninth edition reached Paris and were imported into the United States as genuine copies. One of these, sent by Joyce to Bennett A. Cerf of Random House, was used in setting up the first authorized American edition of Ulysses...Many copies of this piracy were seized by the Society for the Suppression of Vice on October 5, 1929" (Slocum & Calhoun 19).
