Lot Description
[HEMINGWAY, Ernest (1899-1961)]. ST. JOHN, Christopher, editor. Ellen Terry and Bernard Shaw: A Correspondence. New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1931.
8vo. Original red cloth gilt (sunning to spine and boards). Provenance: Captain Louis Henry Cohn (d. 1953), a bookseller and Hemingway's first bibliographer (his booksellers' ticket ("House of Books") on rear pastedown); presented to Ernest and Pauline Hemingway; given to Ruth White Lowry (1884-1974), Hemingway's cousin and Kansas City native (recipient of Hemingway's inscription).
THE HEMINGWAYS' COPY.
FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY ERNEST TO HIS COUSIN, RUTH LOWRY: "Dear Ruth: – This is really a 2nd hand book because it was the gift of Captain Louis Henry Cohn – the great bibliographer – Pauline didn't like it but Shaw and Terry and Captain Colen and Lawrence Stallings all did – so you may find something in it. I have not read it. They must have been very sure how great they were or very careful to have kept all the letters and been able to find them. – Ernest."
