Lot Description

[AMERICANA]. CARVER, Jonathan (1732-1780). Travels through the Interior Parts of North America, in the Years 1766, 1767, and 1768. London: Printed for C. Dilly [&c], 1781.

8vo. Mezzotint portrait of the author, 2 folding maps hand-colored in outline, and 5 plates, four of which are hand-colored. (3 plates trimmed close and bound in reverse, maps and 4 plates laid down, marginal toning or soiling, evidence of ownership signature removal on title). Modern half faux morocco (small split to front joint).

THIRD EDITION, the most complete edition in both text and illustrations. The portrait and the coloring are special to this edition. “Carver, one of the English soldiers wounded and captured at the massacre of Fort William Henry by the French and Indians in 1757, gives a vivid though short eye-witness account of the battle. Though a prisoner of the French and Indians for only three days, when he escaped to Fort Edwards, his is one of the most spirited accounts of the famous massacre. His later frontier experiences in Minnesota and Wisconsin, though formerly discredited, have been accepted as one of the earliest and best accounts of pioneer days in this region” (Vail). Field 251; Graff 622; Howes C-215; Sabin 11184; Vail 654 (first edition).

[With:] BIRKBECK, Morris. Notes on a Journey in America. From the Coast of Virginia to the Territory of Illinois. Dublin: from Thomas Larkin, 1818. Engraved folding map hand-colored in outline. Later half calf. FIRST IRISH EDITION.

Property from the Estate of James G. Hansen at Fetcher House, Winnetka, Illinois
