2 parts in one, folio (18 x 11 inches). Half-title, engraved frontispiece dated 1703 by Vander Gouwe after G. Hoet, title page printed in red and black, engraved dedication, 10 engraved double-page maps, engraved catafalque of Holstenius, one vignette engraved initial and head-piece, woodcut initials, head-and tail-pieces. (A few text leaves and one map browned, spotting and toning to preliminaries including title and engravings.) Contemporary vellum, covers ruled in blind with a large central lozenge, spine in 8 compartments with 7 raised bands, modern label with titling antique in second (covers bowed, front joint and a few compartments repaired, a few paper repairs to endpapers). Provenance: Modern manuscript notations on front pastedown and front flyleaf.
FIRST AMSTERDAM EDITION, originally published in Paris in 1641, this comprehensive work on Christianity underwent several revisions by notable scholars and geographers, including Lucas Holstenius and Philipp Clüver.
