Lot Description
STEIN, Marc Aurel (1862-1943). Ruins of Desert Cathy. London: Macmillan and Co., 1912.
2 volumes, large 8vo. Numerous illustrations from photographs, color frescos, etc., 3 folding color maps. Original brick-red cloth with embossed gilt medallions on upper covers, spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut (light rubbing to spines, some light surface wear to covers).
FIRST EDITION detailing Stein's second expedition to Chinese Turkestan from 1906 to 1908, following his earlier expedition described in his 1903 work "Sand-Buried Ruins of Khotan." Intended for non-specialists, the narrative provides a comprehensive account of Stein's journey, including the challenges of organizing the expedition, the perils of the route through tribal areas of the North-West Frontier and Afghanistan, and his arrival at the western extremity of the Great Wall of China.
[With:] STEIN. On Ancient Central-Asian Tracks. London: Macmillan and Co., 1933. Numerous illustrations, some folding. Original brick-red cloth gilt. FIRST EDITION.
