2 volumes, 8vo. Half-titles; wood-engraved frontispieces, title vignettes, folding map at end of vol.1; publisher's advertisement slip tipped in at half-title. (Marginal tear to p.xiii from the attempted opening of a signature.) Original plum cloth, upper covers with gilt vignettes, gilt-lettered spines, unopened, Edmonds & Remnants binders' ticket (spines sunned). Provenance: David Dead Barrett (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION of a narrative of the legation led by Frederick Bruce, who was the first British minister to China to reside in Beijing. Rennie was the legation's physician. Hanotiau, Western Travellers in China 75.
