8vo. Errata slip and 61pp. itinerary bound in at end. (Closed tears repaired on p.245). Contemporary half black calf (crown repaired, forecorners and endpapers renewed).
FIRST EDITION. John Henry Gray was an English Anglican clergyman and scholar, best known as the inaugural Archdeacon of Hong Kong (1868–1878). Educated at Christ's College, Cambridge, he also served as a consular chaplain in Canton (Guangzhou) and authored notable works on Chinese society, including China: A History of the Laws, Manners and Customs of the People (1878) and Walks in the City of Canton, which detailed life in 1870s Guangzhou.
