VONNEGUT, Kurt (1922-2007). Untitled original portrait. 1971.


Original pastel on paper by noted American author Kurt Vonnegut depicting the drawing's recipient, David Hayman. (Some light soiling.) Image 24 x 18 in. Matted and framed (not examined out of frame, overall dimensions 25 x 31 1/2 in.). Provenance: David Hayman, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Wisconsin.

INSCRIBED BY VONNEGUT, "Dear David, You said you wanted a picture by me. But I haven't made any pictures for three or four years. Last night (New Year's Day, 1971) I suddenly made one. This is it. Cheers, Kurt Vonnegut Jr."

"David" refers to David Hayman, a Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Wisconsin. In addition to being a noted scholar of James Joyce Hayman was a close friend of Kurt Vonnegut who conducted numerous interviews with the author, most notably for the spring 1977 issue of The Paris Review.
