Lot Description
[NATIVE AMERICANS]. CDV of "Yellow Hair / Sioux Chief." Colorado Springs, CO: Byron H. Gurnsey, [1870].
CDV on cardstock mount showing Yellow Hair, or Pehin Zizi, leader of the Brule Lakota. Verso with Gurnsey's Colorado Springs, Colorado imprint, 1870. The portrait was made when Gurnsey had his studio in Sioux City, Iowa, while the Brule delegation of 1870 was returning from the Capitol. The luminous quality of Gurnsey's print is a high standard for the 1870s, not matched again in the west until the late 1890s.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
