Central in this composition is Lincoln's horse, “Old Bob” (also known as “Old Robin”), wearing a funeral blanket specially made for the event. He is positioned between Reverend Brown (left) and Revered Trevan (right), in front of Lincoln’s house, decorated for the funeral with flags and foliage. Two African American men are visible in the background, leaning on the fence.

Reverend Henry Brown (1823-1906) was born into slavery in Raleigh, North Carolina, and later gained his freedom as an adult in Indiana. He became an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal church in 1846 and participated in the Underground Railroad during the 1840s. He notably took part in the 1853 Illinois Colored Convention, and made Springfield his home in 1855. It was in Springfield that he met Lincoln and began doing odd jobs for the Lincoln family. After the President's assassination, Brown was asked to lead the beloved "Old Bob" in the funeral procession, positioned directly behind the hearse.
