Lot Description
[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. GARDNER, Alexander, photographer. Group of President Lincoln, Gen. McClellan, and Suite... Brady, 1862.
Stereoview on buff mount with Gardner's copyright printed to lower recto. Verso bears affixed paper label for Brady's Album Gallery, with image number, title, and caption: "No. 605. / Group of President Lincoln, Gen. McClellan, and Suite, / At Headquarters Army of Potomac, previous to reviewing the troops and the Battle-Field of Antietam, 3d Oct., 1862."
Ostendorf identifies this stereo photograph [O-65] as "The only stereo card published during Lincoln's lifetime (1862) which was actually taken with a stereoscopic camera." Gardner took another stereo photograph on the same day, showing Lincoln and McClellan sitting in the tent, but it would not be published as a stereo card until after the war as part of the series "Photographic War History, 1861-1865."
