Lot Description
[POE, EDGAR ALLAN (1809-1849)]. Three portraits of Edgar Allan Poe, incl. Brady/Anthony CDV.
CDV portrait on cardstock mount with Brady's 1862 copyright beneath image and Anthony/Brady imprint on verso (small loss to left edge of print; mount with some toning and wear to edges/corners). Featured is a half portrait of Poe produced by Brady after a daguerreotype, likely a version of the one made by Edwin H. Manchester in November of 1948, also known as the "Ultima Thule" daguerreotype. Verso also bears affixed paper label for a stationery and fancy goods store in Baltimore.
Cabinet card (toning, loss to upper edge and upper left corner, clipped edges) featuring an illustrated portrait of Poe titled beneath image, "Edgar Poe. / (The Memorial Portrait.)" Featured is an image of a portrait produced by Friederich Bruckmann, which was believed to be an altered derivative of the "Whitman" daguerreotype. Verso also bears affixed newspaper clipping about various plans to honor the memory of Poe, including naming a street, creating a stamp, and erecting a memorial.
2 3/4 x 3 13/16 in. portrait mounted to a 4 3/4 x 7 1/8 in. book page with text below image reading, "Edgar Allan Poe, Born 1809 - Died 1849, From Daguerreotype in Possession of 'Stella'" (toning and dampstaining to page, with wear to previously bound edge). This page comes from The Works of Edgar Allan Poe by John H. Ingram, published by A & C Black of Edinburgh.
Together, 3 images of Edgar Allan Poe.
