Lot Description
LEYDENFROST, Alexander (1888-1961). Tank Paratroopers Fly into Combat. c. 1943.
Oil on canvas of paratroopers landing on a battlefield (cracks throughout, minor losses along margins). Visible area 29 × 21 in. Frame: 32 1/4 × 24 1/4 in. Provenance: A Private Collection.
Alexander Leydenfrost was a Hungarian-American industrial designer and illustrator whose artwork during the Second World War brought the immediacy and drama of the conflict into the homes of millions of Americans. Throughout the war he produced dozens of images of American military prowess for Esquire magazine. This painting was reproduced on page 25 of the June 1943 issue of American Legion magazine as illustration for an article entitled "Invasion Will Be Like This."
