Lot Description
[FLAGS - WORLD WAR I]. "Allied Flag of All Nations," 23-star American flag. Ca 1918.
24 x 46 in. machine-sewn flag comprised of a cotton canton with 23 printed stars, including a large central star surrounded by a ring of four medium stars and two miniature stars, which are surrounded by a ring of 16 small stars. The field is comprised of five red and white, machine-sewn wool stripes, and the hoist is cotton with two brass grommets. The hoist includes the following overprint: "Allied Flag / Of All Nations / Fighting for Freedom." Additional overprint at left: "Let all lands that love sweet Freedom / Form one flag of all God's stars. / Copyright 1918, Paul Dodge." Additional overprint at right identifies the 23 Allies of World War I, beginning with America, France, and Great Britain. Accompanied by original rod.
RARE: One of only two known examples of this flag, the other previously part of the J. Richard Pierce Collection of American Parade Flags.
Through our research, we discovered a printed "Allied Flag of All Nations" postcard featuring the same flag design, which indicates that the stripes represent the United States, Belgium, France, Great Britain, and Italy. Presumably, the 23 stars represent all of the Allies of World War I.
