"Benjamin T. Daugherty, a private in Company K. 31st. Ills. vols. being duly sworn doth depose and say that he enlisted in said regiment and company, August 10th. 1861, and re-enlisted the 5th day of January, 1864; that he was taken prisoner at Hillsborough, Miss., Feb. 10, 1864, was first taken to Cahawba, Ala., and from thence to Andersonville, Ga., in April, 1864; and in October of the same year was taken to Florence, S.C., from which place he was exchanged March 1st, 1865...in neither of those places was he or his fellow prisoners provided with any shelter but were entirely exposed to the inclemency of the weather; and were obliged to dig holes in the ground to protect them in some slight degree from the cold...by reason of such exposure and the other cruel and inhuman treatment to which he was subjected...his feet have come off above the ankle, and he is otherwise reduced to his present condition..."
