Alexander Shaler (1827-1911) joined the New York militia in 1845 and became major of the 7th New York State Militia in December, 1860. He was appointed lieutenant colonel of the 65th New York Volunteers in June, 1861, became colonel in 1862, and was promoted to brigadier general in 1863. Shaler served with the Army of the Potomac until he was taken prisoner at the battle of the Wilderness in May 1864 and held at Macon, GA, until August 1864 when he was exchanged. In July 1865, Shaler was breveted major general. He later received the Medal of Honor in 1893 for gallantry in storming Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg on 3 May 1864 during the campaign of Chancellorsville.
