Lot Description

[MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR]. Detailed letter on captured stationery describing storming the Castle of Chapultepec and the battle for Mexico City. Vera Cruz [Mexico], 8 January 1848.

Letter signed by Thomas Billingley and addressed to A.D. Billingley describing the Battle of Mexico City and written on captured Mexican government stationary. The stationary itself features the {Seal of Mexico} flanked by SELLO TERCERO and CUATRO REALES, and is intended to be signed by the Minister of Exterior Relations. Dated January 8, 1848, with the place of writing specified as Veracruz, the letter was written some three months after the conclusion of the Battle of Mexico City. The letter references the march on Mexico City and the battles of Molino Del Rey, and most particularly the storming of Castle Chapultepec, through the fall of Mexico City. It further describes bunking in the National Palace, from which this sheet was obtained, and the author's impressions of Mexico City. An intriguing firsthand account of the climactic battles that concluded the Mexican-American War.
