Lot Description

**Winchester 1911 12 Gauge Shotgun

12 gauge. 21" barrel length. SN: 76220. Blued metal finish mounting polished wood forend and semi pistol grip stock. Long recoil operated repeating shotgun charged by tubular magazine lacking sights. Barrel has been cut down to just before the knurling. Mounts a WINCHESTER branded hardrubber buttplate.

Designed with a similar long-recoil operated design to the famous Browning Auto-5, the Winchester 1911's primary distinction is its lack of a traditional cocking handle because the patent had not yet run out on the disconnector mechanism that made it possible. As a consequence, the shotgun must be cocked by grasping the barrel and forcing it fully rearward against the pressure of the recoil and return springs. This makes safe operation more difficult than Browning's design, and sales suffered due to their accident prone reputation. Users are encouraged to maintain best practices and muzzle discipline at all times when loading and unloading. {C&R}
