Lot Description
Civil War Era Artillery Gunner's Haversack
American Civil War
Nominally 12.5" by 12.5" with a buckle closure scalloped outer flap and 1.4" wide shoulder strap, adjustable with an iron roller buckle. Pouch is unmarked as to maker, but had a shield shaped escutcheon attached to the face of the flap at some point in time, which is now missing. These leather haversacks were used by the Number 5 man on the gun crew to move the cartridges for cannons in the field from the ammunition chest to the gun, where it was handed off to the Number 2 man for loading. An uncommon Civil War artillery accoutrement that is rarely found for sale.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
