Lot Description
Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Rifle With Star Mark
Indian Wars
.45/70. 32.5" barrel length. SN: 172638. Blued finish with casehardened frame and breechblock mounting a full length straight wrist stock retained by two barrel bands. Single shot trapdoor action breechloading rifle mounting adjustable ladder rear notch and front blade sights. Lockplate is marked with the {US Army Eagle} followed by U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873. Upper surface of the low arch breechblock is struck U.S/MODEL/1873. Barrel is proof marked with V/P/{double stamped Eaglehead}/P. Rifle mounts a three-click tumbler, and a frame the same width as the barrel. Freefloating firing pin. Star mark on the rear receiver near serial number indicates this item was most likely built using overrun and reclaimed parts, hence the mixture of early and later features. Stock has been sanded, rendering the cartouches on the counterpane illegible. Comes with cleaning rod. {ANTIQUE}
