Lot Description

Spencer Model 1860 Carbine
American Civil War

.56-56 Spencer. 22" round barrel secure by a single spring-retained barrel band. SN: 58197. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut butt and forend. Seven-shot repeating lever action cartridge carbine with manually cocked hammer and tubular magazine in butt, folding leaf rear sight, Barleycorn front sight, sling bar and ring and sling swivel in toe. Top of receiver marked in three legible lines: SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO BOSTON MASS/PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860. Serial number on receiver tang. Two visible script cartouches are present on the reverse wrist with the MMJ of Martin McNary Johnson stamped vertically behind the sling bar and the DAP of Dwight A Perkins stamped horizontally to the rear of the first cartouche. The original and correct pattern magazine follower tube is in place in the butt. A search of the Springfield Research Service database did not find this carbine, a large number of Spencer carbines in the 58000-59000 range were issued to the 1st New York Mounted Rifles, with the two closest guns being #58162 and #58204. The Springfield Research Service books do not have numbers for all of the companies in that regiment, and only companies D, G, H, I, K and M are listed, making it very likely that this gun was used by one of the other companies like A, B, C, etc. A solid example of a Civil War Spencer carbine which has not undergone post-war modifications for Indian War service and with two good cartouches on the wrist. {ANTIQUE}
