US Model 1864 Rifle Musket (M1863 Type II) by Springfield
American Civil War
.58 caliber. 40" barrel. NSN. Bright finish, steel furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with three solid, rounded, spring-retained barrel bands, 1864 pattern two leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and a full-length straight shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle} and U.S./SPRINGFIELD forward of the hammer and dated 1864 at the tail. Flat bolster face with {Spread-Winged Eagle} and top of breech with matching 1864 date. Left angled breech flat with usual V/P/{Eagle Head} proof marks. Two clear script cartouches are present on the counterpane, the WPT of William P Taylor and the ESA of Springfield Master Armorer Erskine S Allin. The Model 1864 was the last of the US arsenal produced muzzleloading .58 caliber percussion rifle muskets to be manufactured. {ANTIQUE}
