William Muir Contract US Model 1861 Rifle Musket
American Civil War
.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three flat, spring retains barrel bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, smooth walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading military rifle musket with M1861 pattern three leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and a swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with {Spread-Winged Eagle} over U.S. and Wm MUIR & Co/WINDSOR LOCKS forward of hammer and dated 1864 at tail. Breech with a restamped 1864 date in small, individual dies, and standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proof marks. Two weak script cartouches are present on counterpane, both the WP initials of William Page, which is correct for this contract. William Muir had a contract to provide 30,000 rifle muskets to the US government and actually fulfilled the contract by delivering the full amount between 1863 and 1864. {ANTIQUE}
