Muzzleloading percussion rifle musket with 1861 pattern three-leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle} over U.S. and E. ROBINSON/NEW YORK forward of the hammer and dated 1863 at the tail. Breech dated 1863 as well with the standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs on the left angled flat. No visible cartouches on counterpane. Despite receiving numerous contracts for US Model 1861 Rifle Muskets, that initially numbered as many as 90,000 guns, Robinson only managed to deliver 30,000 between 1863 and 1865. Robinson Model 1861s appear with several variants of the lock markings, including the rarely encountered U.A. CO. (Union Arms Company) mark. {ANTIQUE}
