Lot Description

New Jersey Surcharged US Model 1861 Rifle Musket by Savage
American Civil War

.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three flat, spring retained bands. NSN. Bright finish, color casehardened lock, iron furniture, full-length walnut musket stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with M1861 three leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread Winged Eagle}/U.S. and in two lines SAVAGE R.F.A. Co./MIDDLETOWN, Ct. forward of the hammer. Dated 1863 at tail of lock and 1863 on top of breech. Standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs on breech. The left barrel flat is stamped NJ and the couterpane has a deep block NJ mark as well, both indicating State of New Jersey purchase and ownership. {ANTIQUE}
