Lot Description

William Muir Contract US Model 1861 Rifle Musket
American Civil War

.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three flat, spring retains barrel bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, smooth walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading military rifle musket with M1861 pattern three leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and a swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with {Spread-Winged Eagle} over U.S. and Wm MUIR & Co/WINDSOR LOCKS forward of hammer and dated 1864 at tail. Breech with matching 1864 date, and standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proof marks. However the direction of the "Eagle Head" indicates that this barrel is from a Providence Tool rifle musket. No cartouches present on counterpane. William Muir had a contract to provide 30,000 rifle muskets to the US government and actually fulfilled the contract by delivering the full amount between 1863 and 1864.{ANTIQUE}

From the Lifetime Collection of Robert G. Paulsen
