Scarce 1861 Dated & Inspected Ames U.S. Model 1850 Foot Officer's Sword
American Civil War
30.5" spearpoint blade with 21.25" stopped median fuller 1" wide at ricasso. Overall length 36.25" in overall length. 5.75" hilt with gilt cast brass guard with foliate decorations in the face and a knuckle bow. Grooved wood grip covered in shagreen with 15 wraps of twisted wire. Reverse ricasso with Ames "scroll" mark address, obverse ricasso marked US/GGS/1861. The "GGS" mark is that of arsenal sub-inspector George G Saunders, who inspected the 425 Ames foot officer's swords delivered under the 1861 contract. Blade etched throughout with foliate, patriotic and martial themes. The sword is accompanied by a browned steel scabbard with gilt brass mounts with the throat missing. The reverse of the upper mount is correctly Ames marked.
