Lot Description
**Scarce NRA Marked US Springfield Model 1903 Rifle
World War I
.30-06. 24" barrel length. SN: 615701. Blued metal finish mounting a walnut s-type straight stock with full length upper handguard. Bolt action internal magazine fed rifle charged with stripper clips and mounting adjustable rear ladder and fully hooded front sights. Receiver struck U.S/SPRINGFIELD/ARMORY/MODEL 1903. with serial number beneath. Barrel date mark reads S.A./{Ordnance Bomb}/10-15, indicating it was produced in October, 1915. Rifle additionally marked with an {Ordnance Bomb} on the triggerguard tang, along with N.R.A. initials. J.S.A. stamped on left side of wrist above trigger. Features circled P on underside of wrist and a 13 inscribed behind trigger guard. Currently mounts a reproduction Model 1907 leather sling. Triggerguard markings indicate this was one of the rifles sold by the Director of Civilian Marksmanship to NRA members between 1913 and 1916. The rising tensions in Europe that erupted into World War I had spurred on the call for improved preparation for the war to come, with this rifle serving as a tangible piece of this moment in history. {C&R}
