Lot Description

US Model 1871 Rolling Block Army Pistol
Indian Wars

.50-25 Centerfire. 8" barrel length. NSN. Blued and color casehardened finish, smooth walnut forend and grip. Single-shot rolling bock pistol with front blade sight and rear notch cut into top of breechblock. Left with "P" and "S" inspection marks and marked in two lines: REMINGTON'S ILION. N.Y. U.S.A./PAT. MAY 3D. NOV. 5TH 1864. APRIL 17TH 1866. The top line of the marking is rolled very lightly. Left grip with a clear script CRS inspector's cartouche, the mark of arsenal sub-inspector of Curtis R. Stickney. In 1871 the US Army acquired 5,000 of these single shot pistols from Remington by trading in 5,000 Remington New Model Army percussion revolvers in payment. The single shot pistols proved to be impractical for use on the expanding western frontier and were quickly abounded in favor or the new Colt Single Action Army Revolver in 1873. {ANTIQUE}
