Lot Description

Fine Miller Conversion of a Parkers' Snow & Co US Model 1861 Rifle Musket with Springfield Armory Inventory Tag
Indian Wars

.58 Rimfire. 39.5" barrel secured by three flat, spring retained bands. NSN. Bright finish, case hardened breech block, iron furniture, walnut musket stock. Single shot breech loading cartridge alteration of a Parkers' Snow, & Co contract US Model 1861 Rifle Musket using Miller's patented beech block. Lock marked with standard Parkers, Snow & Co markings, breech marked two line Miller patent information and two line Meriden Manufacturing information. No cartouches present and there probably never were any. Retains the original M1861 pattern three-leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and a swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Circa 1865-1867 some 2,000 Parkers' Snow & Co M1861 Rifle Muskets were altered to breechloading cartridge arms by the Charles Parker's Meriden Manufacturing Company, which would go on to be the famous Parker Brothers Shotgun Company. Some of the guns were apparently purchased by the states of Maryland and New York for militia use, at least on a trial basis and some were acquired and sold by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. This example was formerly in the Springfield Armory Collection and retains the original brass Springfield Armory inventory tag with the inventory number SA034. A fine example of a scarce post-war cartridge altered rifle musket. {ANTIQUE}
