Lot Description

Whitney Contract US Model 1841 Rifle
American Civil War

.54 caliber. 33" round barrel secured by two flat brass spring-retained barrel bands. NSN. Browned barrel, color casehardened lock and hammer, brass furniture, smooth walnut stock with patchbox. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle with fixed notch rear sight, brass blade front sight, sling swivels on the upper barrel band and in bow of triggerguard and a full-length brass tipped trumpet head ramrod. Lock marked in two horizontal lines under the bolster E. WHITNEY/US and in two vertical lines at the tail of the lock N. HAVEN/1850. The breech plug tang marked with a matching 1850 date. The upper left quadrant of the breech is marked US/SM/VP and the left flat of the barrel is marked STEEL. Stock counterpane opposite the lock is marked with two clear script cartouches, the first the SK of arsenal sub-inspector Samuel Knous and the second the WAT of Ordnance Officers William Anderson Thornton. A spare nipple remains in the patchbox. {ANTIQUE}
