Lot Description
Fine British Pattern 1853 Type III Rifle Musket by Cooper & Goodman
American Civil War
.577 caliber. 39" barrel. NSN. Blued and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, three iron screw clamping barrel bands, full-length European walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with 900 yard ladder rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug and a sling swivel on the upper barrel band and in bow of triggeguard. Lock marked with the usual British Crown without at "VR" at the tail and 1863/TOWER forward of the hammer. Standard Birmingham commercial proof, view and gauge marks at left of breech. Clear COOPER & GOODMAN contractor mark in toe of stock with a small, deep BSAT mark and a {CROWN}/C&G behind the triggerguard. A crisp Birmingham Small Arms Trade (BSAT) roundel is stamped in the obverse butt. Gun retains a period snap cap (nipple protector) and a correct full-length ramrod with a T&CG (Thomas & Charles Gilbert) contractor mark. A really crisp and fine example of the second most used long arm of the American Civil War, this lovely example could have seen service on either side during that conflict. {ANTIQUE}
