Lot Description
1865 Dated Remington Contract US Model 1863 Rifle Musket
American Civil War
.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three round clamping barrel bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with M1864 pattern L-shaped leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and a full-length, straight-shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread-Winged Eagle}/US and REMINGTON'S/ILION, N.Y. forward of the hammer and dated 1865 at the tail. Breech with matching 1865 date. left angled breech flat with standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs. Counterpane with two partially legible cartouches, the script TWR of Thomas W Russell and the script OWA of Orville W Ainsworth. The initials GHT are carved in the bottom of the stock, forward of the triggerguard. Due to the political power of New York's senators, Remington was one of the few arms contractors who were allowed to deliver all of their Civil War contract arms, even after the war had concluded. Most other makers had their contracts cancelled in April of 1865 and any completed arms on hand that had not been delivered yet were not allowed to be delivered. {ANTIQUE}
