Lot Description
1865 Dated Remington Contract US Model 1863/64 Rifle Musket
American Civil War
.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three rounded screw clamping bands. NSN. Bright finish, color casehardened lock, iron furniture, walnut musket stock. Single shot muzzleloading percussion rifle musket with M1864 L-shaped leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and straight shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked forward of the hammer with a {Spread-Winged Eagle} and REMINGTON'S/ILION, N.Y. Tail of lock dated 1865 with matching 1865 date on top of breech. Flat faced bolster with {Spread-Winged Eagle}, breech with standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs as well as a British Birmingham commercial proof and "25" gauge mark, indicting .577 caliber. Counterpane with two script cartouches, the TWR of arsenal sub-inspector Thomas W Russell and the OWA of Orville W Ainsworth. Obverse butt stamped with the French style rack or inventory number 2075. This appears to be one of the thousands of Civil War era rifle muskets sold to the French during the Franco-Prussian War as surplus, at which time it received the stamped inventory number on the butt. It at some point passed through England, either prior to arriving in France or afterward, and at that time received the British proofs on the barrel. {ANTIQUE}
