Lot Description
Composite Windsor Locks US Model 1861 Rifle Musket
American Civil War
.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three flat, spring retains barrel bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, smooth walnut stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading military rifle musket with M1861 pattern three leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and a swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with {Spread-Winged Eagle} and U.S./WINDSOR LOCKS forward of hammer and dated 1862 at tail. Breech with matching 1862 date, and standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proof marks. A pair of script cartouches are present on counterpane, the HSH of Henry S Hill and the ESA of Erskine S Allin, indicating the stock is from a Springfield M1861 Rifle Musket and a replacement. The US M1861 contract rifle muskets with the "Windsor Lock" marked locks are attributed to the earliest delivered by William Muir who had a contract to provide 30,000 rifle muskets to the US government. Only the earliest guns bear this lock mark, as later ones are marked with Muir's name. Muir actually fulfilled the contract by delivering the full amount between 1863 and 1864. {ANTIQUE}
