US Springfield Model 1855 Rifle Musket with Patchbox - Dated 1860
American Civil War
.58 caliber. 40" barrel secured by three flat, spring retained bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, full-length walnut musket stock with iron patchbox. Single shot percussion muzzleloading rifle musket with Maynard automatic tape primer, M1858 three-leaf rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug, sling swivels and swelled shank tulip head ramrod. Lock marked with a {Spread Winged Eagle} on the tape primer magazine door and in two lines U.S./SPRINGFIELD forward of the hammer. Dated 1860 at tail of lock and top of breech. Standard V/P/{Eagle Head} proofs on breech. No cartouches on counterpane or evidence there ever were any. A nice example of a scarce and desirable "patch box" US Model 1855 Rifle Musket produced immediately prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War. {ANTIQUE}
