Lot Description

Merrill Rifle Saber Bayonet
American Civil War

19.5" semi-Yataghan blade with 14.5" median fuller, 1" wide at ricasso. Overall length 24.25". 4.625" cast brass hilt with 17 grooves in the grip. Unmarked blade, no reinforcement pin in hilt, indicating Ames rather than Collins manufacture. Top of hilt numbered 8480. Muzzle ring diameter .795". Rear mortise cut for a standard bayonet lug foot without a key and will accept a nominally .38" wide foot, .22" wide neck and is cut 1.21" in length. One of the rarer of US military saber bayonets from the American Civil War, only 800 Merrill Rifles were acquired by the US military during the war, many of them being issued to the 21st Indiana Infantry. A scarce bayonet to accompany your Merrill Rifle.
