Lot Description

Sharps New Model 1863 Rifle
American Civil War

.52 caliber. 30" round barrel secured by three rounded, solid, spring-retained barrel bands. SN: C,31898. Blued and color casehardened finish, iron furniture, smooth walnut stock and forend. Single shot percussion breechloading Sharps rifle with correct Lawrence patent military ladder rear sight, Barleycorn combination front sight and socket bayonet lug and sling swivels. Standard Sharps New Model 1863 lock and receiver markings covering the various patents, barrel marked NEW MODEL 1863 between the rear sight and receiver and with the standard 3-line address forward of the receiver. Reverse wrist with two script TWR cartouches, the mark of arsenal sub-inspector Thomas W Russell. Left barrel flat and top of comb with a block EPR inspection. This rifle lands in the serial number range of Sharps Rifles issued to the 2nd Veteran Volunteer Regiment, with numbers C,31886, and C,31895 being the two closest numbers in Springfield Research Service serial number books and both being 2nd Veteran Volunteer guns. The rifle is accompanied by an old leather military sling that is not of the correct pattern. {ANTIQUE}
