Lot Description
Martial Ballard Carbine
American Civil War
.44RF, 22" octagonal-to-round barrel, S/N 10522. Blued finish, military walnut stock and forend, carbine butt. Single shot breechloading dropping block carbine with folding military L-shaped leaf rear sight, blade front sight, open loop lever, single barrel band, sling swivels in toe and on barrel band. Left side of receiver marked with two two-line stamps: BALL & WILLIAMS/Worscester, Mass. and MERWIN & BRAY AGT'S/NEW YORK. Right side marked in two lines: BALLARD'S PATENT/NOV. 5, 1861. Appropriately marked with MM of H sub-inspections on the left barrel flat, receiver, breech block and stock comb and with correct MM script cartouche at wrist. This carbine is part of a late Civil War contract for 5,000 guns that the Ordnance Department placed in 1864, however only 1,500 of the guns were delivered, 1,000 in March and 500 in August of that year. These guns are known in two serial number ranges, 6,6XX-6,8XX and nominally 9,8XX to 10,5XX, and this example lands right at the end of this second range of numbers. A scarce US martial Civil War carbine. {ANTIQUE}
