Lot Description

Remington Jenks Naval Carbine
American Civil War

.54 caliber. 24.25" round barrel secured by a two flat brass screw-retained barrel bands. SN: 3/18. Browned and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot percussion breechloading rifled carbine with the Maynard automatic priming system. Breech marked: Wm Jenks and in five lines: USN/RP/ P/1847/CAST-STEEL. Mule-ear lock marked in three lines: REMINGTON'S/HERKIMER/N.Y. Interior of breech lever marked 3/18 and interior of primer system numbered 618. Single slightly soft cartouche on the counterpane, the script RP of sub-inspector Richard Paine. Carbine is in the standard "modified" configuration with the oval rather than round loading aperture and a rifled bore. Sling ring remains in tang of triggerguard. One of 1,000 Jenks Mule Ear Navy Carbines manufactured by Remington ca 1847-48 which incorporated the Maynard automatic priming system into the lock. A scarce naval carbine in its own right, it remains in very nice condition. {ANTIQUE}
