Lot Description
Confederate Cavalry Saber in Wooden Scabbard by Kraft, Goldschmidt & Kraft or H. Marshall
American Civil War
36" single edged spear point blade with a nominally 26" unstopped median fuller. Overall length 41.25" with a 1.43" wide blade at the ricasso. 5.5" hilt with a cast brass guard that has two branches and a knuckle bow, terminating in a rudimentary Phrygian helmet pommel cap. Grooved wood grip with thirteen wraps of single strand iron wire, leather covering gone. Saber includes its wooden scabbard with japanned sheet iron mounts with brass trim, including the throat and drag, and brass suspension hardware. Upper suspension ring missing from brass hanger, middle iron split ring in place. Confederate sabers of this pattern are attributed to both Kraft, Goldschmidt & Kraft of Columbia, SC and Hammond Marshall of Atlanta, GA. Early attributions in the 1960s favored KG&K, with later opinions suggesting that Marshall was the maker but have now apparently circled back to favoring KG&K. In the opinion of this cataloguer, the long, broad blade with a flat spine is more typical of other KG&K sabers. A lovely, untouched attic example of a desirable Confederate saber.
