Lot Description

1844 Dated US Springfield Model 1842 Musket
Mexican American War

.69 caliber. 42" barrel secured by three flat, spring-retained barrel bands. NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, smooth walnut stock. Single shot muzzleloading smoothbore infantry musket with no rear sight, brass blade front sight, sling swivels and steel trumpet head ramrod. Standard Springfield lock markings consisting of a {Spread-Winged Eagle}/US forward of the hammer and in three vertical lines at the tail of the lock SPRING/FIELD/1844. Breech plug tang with the sate 184?, with the last digit hard to distinguish. Standard V/P/{Eagle Head} inspection marks, as well as a Harpers Ferry sub-inspection of AR/P. Counterpane of stock with a crisp and clear script JS cartouche, the mark of Springfield Arsenal inspector James Stillman. The block letters SRC are stamped in the wood behind the triggerguard. A very nice example the last of the US military smoothbore muskets, that appears to mate a Harpers Ferry barrel with a Springfield lock and stock. {ANTIQUE}
