Lot Description

Savage Navy Revolver .36

.36 caliber. 7.125" octagonal barrel. SN: 600. Blued and color casehardened finish, smooth walnut grips. Ring cocking "figure-8" percussion revolver with a six-chamber un-fluted cylinder, notch rear sight and replacement blade front sight. Standard three-line top strap marking. Matching assembly number 283 on left of frame under grip, under barrel and on rear face of cylinder. No martial markings are present. About 20,000 of these unique, final variation of the Savage-North ring cocking pistols were produced circa 1861-1863 with about 65% being acquired under contract by the US Government during the American Civil War, 11,864 by the Army and 800 by the Navy. The balance were sold on the civilian market, but some of these were also acquired for war time use as open market purchases. This example does not have any martial markings. {ANTIQUE}
